Why Local and Remote Counts May Differ

Different counts do not automatically mean missing photos. Watermelon Backup uses content hashes to avoid storing the same original content repeatedly within a month.

Updated July 17, 2026

Duplicate handling

Watermelon Backup backs up by month and uses content hashes to detect duplicate original content. If the same original content appears more than once in a month, the remote backup may keep one actual file while the backup manifest records the related items.

Why size can differ

Remote storage usage can be lower than local totals because duplicated bytes are not stored repeatedly. Small manifest and index files, plus each provider's accounting, can also make the displayed size differ.

When to investigate

  • A task ended with failures.
  • A month is marked incomplete.
  • Downloads fail integrity checks or missing-resource warnings appear.
